Mixologist's Notes

  • While the Tequila Sunrise gained rock-star fame in the 1970s, the Sunset never quite achieved the same cultural status. Still, it remains a bartender’s favorite twist, offering a darker, less sugary alternative that balances sweetness with berry depth.

Flavor Profile

Similar to a Tequila Sunrise, but with a richer, spicier or more dramatic visual twist.

About the Tequila Sunset cocktail

If the Tequila Sunrise is a bright, carefree vacation drink, the Tequila Sunset is its moody sibling.

With its deep red or blackberry-hued base, this variation trades the sweet grenadine of the Sunrise for blackberry brandy or cassis, giving the cocktail richer fruit notes and a more dramatic appearance.

The result is a layered drink that evokes twilight skies rather than early morning light.

Though less famous than its sunrise counterpart, the Tequila Sunset has a devoted following among those who like their tequila drinks a little less sweet and a little more intriguing.

What Makes the Tequila Sunset Cocktail Special

The Tequila Sunset retains the same approachable format—tequila and citrus juice—while swapping in a darker, berry-flavored liqueur for the red layer.

This substitution not only changes the look of the cocktail but also transforms the flavor, making it fruitier, more complex, and less cloying than the Sunrise.

Visually, the cocktail’s darker tones give it a more sophisticated feel, making it an excellent choice for evening gatherings or when you want a familiar drink with a fresh identity.

Spirit Swaps and Food Pairings

  • Swaps: Use crème de cassis for a sharper, more tart profile or experiment with Chambord for a raspberry-driven version.

    • For citrus, orange juice is traditional, but some bartenders use blood orange juice for a more dramatic hue.

  • Pairings: The Tequila Sunset pairs beautifully with grilled meats, barbecue, or charcuterie boards.

    • The deeper fruit flavors work especially well with smoky, savory dishes.

Closing Thoughts

The Tequila Sunset proves that small changes can make a big impact.

By swapping grenadine for a richer fruit liqueur, you get a cocktail that’s just as beautiful as the original but with a personality all its own.

If you’re looking for something visually dramatic and flavorfully complex, the Tequila Sunset is a worthy addition to your tequila repertoire.
